Füssen, a medieval town near the Neuschwanstein castle, is a great tourist destination offering excellent accommodation from hostels to 5-star hotels.

Tourists are spoiled for choice with accommodation in Füssen. There is a wide range of hotels, guesthouses and apartments starting at 2-star to 4-star. Many are in the delightful town of Füssen, but others are in tiny outlying villages such as Schwangau, Hohenschwangau, Hopfen am See and Pfronten. Almost all offer breakfast inclusive.

Four and Five-Star Hotels in Füssen

For those who want to go all-out, the Hirsch offers ‘Motif-rooms’ dedicated to various famous people such as King Ludwig II or Queen Marie or even the violin makers of Füssen. For the 2011 season, such splendid rooms start at 153 Euros in the low season and rise to 183 Euros in the High Season (April 1 – Oct 31 and Dec 23- Jan7). A standard double bedroom (with breakfast included) at the Hirsh starts at 123 Euros to a top of 148 Euros.

Another romantic and stylish hotel is the 4-star Hotel Sonne, which offers saunas, infrared cabins and steam rooms plus massage and cosmetics treatments and a gym. It has two restaurants and a beer garden. Double room prices range from 111 Euros to 175 Euros, depending on room theme and season.

Cheap Accommodation in and Around Füssen

Prices currently (2011) available for double rooms in guest houses, B and Bs and budget hotels range from 69 Euros to below 20 Euros per person for shared accommodation.

Typical properties include Haus Gabriel B and B, which is only 2 minutes’ walk from the railway station (69 Euros), Haus L.A., a hostel with limited private rooms but offering dormitory accommodation from 18 Euros per person per night and an apartment from 58 Euros per night for a couple up to 140 Euros for 7 persons.

The Aldstadthotel Zum Hechten

Most Füssen hotels range from 100-130 Euros per night for a pleasant double room with breakfast. A good example of a quality Füssen hotel is the Altstadthotel Zum Hechtem, which translates as the Old Town Hotel at the sign of the Pike (fish). This hotel is a family-run operation and the visitor may actually see the older generation in action at breakfast time. It is well situated in the main street and very close to the Hohe Schloss and town museum, and surrounded by eating houses. The hotel itself has an excellent coffee shop on street level and features two restaurants.

Breakfast at Zum Hechten is a sumptuous buffet in the German style with lots of bread and platters of meats and cheeses (see accompanying photos). The bedrooms are elegant with interesting lighting and bedding is extremely comfortable. Plump pillows are punched in the middle to make twin peaks – another common German characteristic and double beds have a doona on either side – no struggling for a share of the blankets. Prices range from 96-100 Euros for a double room inclusive of breakfast and taxes. It can pay to go direct to the hotel’s own site rather than to use a booking agent.

Füssen is a charming medieval town in a wellness and ski area of great natural beauty. The principal tourist attraction is the nearby Neuschwanstein castle of King Ludwig II.
